One in Five is your inside look at the issues that affect the independence of people with disabilities.

We chose the publication's name to remind everyone that "one in five" Americans have a disability. Those of us with at least one physical, developmental, sensory, or psychiatric disability are 50 million strong. A national Harris poll shows that disability is on the rise, especially as America ages. People with disabilities are a vital economic and social force. We welcome guest columns and letters to the editor.

For more than 20 years, Alpha One has been Maine 's leading disability organization, and we are respected across the nation. One in Five is one aspect of our on-going effort to bring positive change to the lives of people with disabilities.

Our goal is two-fold — to keep you informed about independent living and to identify Alpha One as the recognized local expert on disability. We encourage you to share these resources with your family, friends, and co-workers.
